The Drakensberg Mountains is one of the hidden tourist gems that South Africa has to offer. The scenery is spectacular, dramatic and inspiring. On a good day views of over 160km are possible with the crisp peaks easily identifiable. There is lots to do from the most beautiful hiking trails in the world to adventure, horse trails, historic tours, mountain biking, the drakensberg boys choir, white water rafting, bird watching, arts and crafts, busdhman rock art, resturants and much much more.
Till now there have been no good tourist road maps of the Drakensberg region but now the guys from www.drakensberg-tou rist-map.com have come out with a free downloadable tourist map of this region. What makes me excited is that its to scale, differentiates between surfaced and unsurfaced roads, and is clear easy to use for navigating. Distances are shown, and all the sights and attractions of the area. All activities are listed with phone numbers, and the best selection trails in the national parks are listed. Locations for viewing bushman rock art to boot.
1. Hiking Hiking trails in the 'berg offer something for everyone. Stroll through the foothills, hike the upper reaches or take on a challenging peak. Hiking maps are available at the start of the trails from KZN Wildlife. You can also overnight in a cave, tent or hut.
2. Bushman Rock Art The best Bushman rock art can be viewed at Kamberg. There is an excellent video presentation before the 3 hour guided tour. The rock art at Giants Castle at the main caves is also good and is an easy walk. The Didima Rock Art Centre at Cathedral Peak offers a great presentation although the paintings are reproductions. All rock art must be viewed with a guide
3. Horse riding Horse riding through the foothills of the Drakensberg is an experience not to be missed. Sengani offers safe trails for beginners and experienced alike. Spionkop game reserve even offers game viewing on horse back
4. Battlefields Steeped in history, the Battlefields Region offers enthralling tales of British, Boer, Zulu and Voortrekker history. The Anglo Boer War reached as far south as Mooi River and the many sites are best visited with a specialist guide
5. Arts and Crafts The region offers a fun and fascinating collection of art galleries, craft shops, cheese tastings, leather work, antiques, clothing, gifts and pottery. All the activities on the map have been chosen for their unique representation of South African creativity. Take a slow journey to view outstanding galleries such as Millgate, Indigo Fields Gallery, and Zombeza. Community development projects like Eyethu Ceramics and Thandanani Craft uplift local communities allowing tourism a wider benefit.
6. Sani Pass Tour A trip up Sani Pass into Lesotho and a visit to the highest pub in Africa is a must. It's a dramatic 4x4 trail climbing 1330m in 6,5 km's Passports required.**
7. Birding and Game Viewing Game viewing is available at Weenen, Spionkop, Umgeni Valley and Golden Gate. For Birders the Lammergeyer hide at Giants Castle the Crane Foundation at Kamberg and the bird of prey display at Falcon Ridge are highlights. Fort Durnford in Estcourt offers one of the most complete bird egg collections in South Africa.
8. Adventure Tours For adventure seekers the region offers white water rafting and quad bikes , the longest cable slide in South Africa, a gorge swing and a flying trapeze (see 5), bicycle tours and even hot air ballooning
